In the November Insight cover story "Just Plain Serious," I wrote about Outagamie County Regional Airport and how executive director, Marty Lenss, says competing for airline service is like “running a marathon.” Come January, the marathon will be a little tougher.
Late last week, United Airlines announced it would end its daily direct flights between Appleton and Denver come January. United Airlines says the flight wasn’t attracting enough interest, but that United would maintain its six daily flights between Appleton and Chicago.
For now, Lenss will work with other airlines to see if they can fill the hole left by the Denver flight.
As Lenss says in the November story, “There are only a certain number of flights. You really need to make a strong business case for an airline to add another flight or bring a new destination here. It’s so competitive.”
Another wrinkle is the myriad of airline mergers. Who knows? Maybe the merger between United and Continental will open up other opportunities for more Appleton flights. Time will tell.
