Briess Malt & Ingredients Co.’s $17 million investment in its Manitowoc facility is designed to streamline operations for the Chilton-based business, which sells malt to breweries and bakeries around the world.
As part of the project, the company will open the Briess Experience Center, where customers can gather and learn more about the company’s history. Beginning in 2017, Briess began improving its Manitowoc facilities by removing older buildings and then rebuilt a roast house and packaging area. Once work is complete, Briess will hire another 20 to 25 employees in Manitowoc.
Moving more production to Manitowoc will make Briess’ supply chain more efficient and eco-friendly since malt will be able to leave that site on truck or rail.
As operations expand in Manitowoc, Briess also plans to close and dismantle its Chilton Malthouse, which has been in operation for 118 years. Key items from that building will be moved to the Briess Experience Center. This is expected to take place within the next three years.
Briess officials say employees affected by the Chilton malthouse closing will be offered jobs elsewhere with the company.
