The NEW Manufacturing Alliance will hold its 5th annual Get Real Math video premiere Tuesday, Oct. 1 at the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay. This event unites industry representatives and educators to celebrate an innovative approach to addressing career awareness and the importance of learning math.
Last year’s event drew more than 200 attendees from throughout Northeast Wisconsin. Pete Petoniak of WLUK Fox 11 will again serve as emcee.
Get Real Math videos showcase to K-12 students how they can use math in the real word. They got their start five years ago when an educator asked the alliance how she could answer her students’ frequently asked question, “When am I ever going to use this in the real word?”
The videos and lesson plans, written by math teachers, help schools with academic and career planning and are available at no cost on the NEWMA website. Over the years, companies, including Sargento, Georgia-Pacific and Fincantieri Marinette Marine, have partnered with the alliance to produce dozens of videos.
Raffles at the event include a Miller Electric welding machine, in addition to four $500 cash awards to a school’s math or tech ed department. Member company representatives have an opportunity to win the production of three free Get Real Math videos.
The event begins with a networking reception at 5 p.m., with the premiere starting at 6 p.m. and concluding at 7:30 p.m. The registration deadline for the free event is Friday, Sept. 27. To register or see past Get Real Math videos, visit newmfgalliance.org.
