OUR STORY BEGINS WITH THE extraordinary vision of one of the true pioneers of arts and culture in Northeast Wisconsin, Dr. Edward W. Weidner. It was Dr. Weidner who imagined the scope and beauty of what the Weidner Center would be.
Early on Dr. David and Mary Ann Cofrin, saw and supported Dr. Weidner’s wish. Their only stipulations were that the center serve the community, be located on UW-Green Bay’s scenic bayshore campus, and be named in honor of Chancellor Emeritus Edward W. Weidner.
With significant fundraising, community involvement, and perseverance Dr. Weidner’s shared dream became a reality. The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts officially opened its doors on January 15, 1993, forging an entirely new frontier in the cultural life of Northeast Wisconsin.
For the last 25 years it has been the Weidner Center’s mission to delight, to educate, to inspire, and to entertain. So far, we have welcomed over 4 million guests through the Weidner doors. Our facility is a special place where performance, art, and education come alive and thrive through diverse presentations of live-entertainment, special events, masterclasses, and educational camps. The Weidner Center is both a community and campus crown jewel, amazing national and international performers with its beauty and acoustics. Each year, hundreds of UW-Green Bay music and theater students also have the opportunity to be center stage as they learn, grow and perfect their live performance skills. For many, performing at the Weidner is the highlight of their college careers. How honored we are to play a role in creating such memorable moments!
Our Spring 2018 lineup continues with the Tony Award-winning musicals Jersey Boys, and Rogers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, as well as PAW Patrol Live!, Riverdance: 20 Years, and so much more. Soon after, we’ll announce our 2018/2019 Anniversary Season.
In the spirit of Chancellor Weidner’s vision, we continue our commitment to serve as an educational champion of the arts throughout Northeast Wisconsin. Perhaps the guest hostess of our Grand Opening Celebration said it best:
“Art is the signature of civilizations.” – Beverly Sills, guest hostess, Weidner Center Grand Opening, Jan 15, 1993.
Here’s to the next 25!
