The distance between the tee box and the flag represents an opportunity.

For the serious golfer, the time it takes to traverse that distance is a test of skill and experience in club selection and shot-making. For the business golfer spending the day out of the office, the time can be critical to cementing a new relationship or rewarding a longtime client.

“I don’t know that a lot of work gets done, but it is a great opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with a captive audience,” says Marilyn Heim, special events manager at the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, who plans the group’s annual golf outing each June. “It’s perfect for networking and making connections.”

Heim says it’s also a great way to reward valuable clients.

“It’s a chance to get out, play golf and have some fun,” she says.

For those who enjoy mixing the golf course and networking, plenty of opportunities exist.

Some, such as the chamber of commerce events from Green Bay to Oshkosh, are all about business networking opportunities and serving as an organizational fundraiser. Others, such as the U.S. Venture Open, offer a chance to link a passion for golf with an opportunity to support a good cause.

“You get a lot of time to talk with people,” says Cathy Mutschler, director of giving and community engagement with U.S. Venture. “Who wouldn’t want to be outside on a great summer day in Wisconsin?”

One of the largest of the summer golf outings, the U.S. Venture Open is played on five area courses and attracted more than 800 golfers in 2013. This year, organizers are shooting for a sellout of more than 860 golfers taking part in the Aug. 13 event, which raises money for U.S. Venture’s Fund for Basic Needs.

Milwaukee Braves and Brewers legend Hank Aaron will attend as a featured guest. Organizers hope his presence will help them meet their $2.25 million fundraising goal for 2014. The event raised $2.12 million in 2013 and its previous high was $2.2 million in 2010.

All the proceeds go to the U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs, an endowment managed by the community foundations in Green Bay, Oshkosh and the Fox Cities.

The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce will hold its Business Trifecta event at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton. The Business Awards Luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A Business Expo speed networking event will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required for the speed networking event, which allows participants a one-minute elevator speech with seven tables of 10 people each. A Business Connection will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. For more information or to register, go to

The United Way Day of Action for businesses will be held. Companies can coordinate a service project, run a collection drive, donate to a pantry or conduct another volunteer activity. For more information, contact Lisa Clark at (920) 593-4769.
