Encapsulating innovation

Sometimes a business leader begins speaking and you immediately know you won’t forget the message. That’s exactly how I felt last December while attending the New North Summit as Mary Goggans, president of Encapsys in Appleton, took the stage for her ED (economic development) Talk. She spoke about the advanced technology the company uses and the amazing innovation Encapsys employees engage in every day.

Encapsulation is not a simple process, but Goggans made it easy to understand as she explained how Encapsys developed the technology first to enclose ink — but now fragrance and other substances as well — in these microscopic bubbles that release what’s inside them upon touch. It was captivating to learn how this technology has grown here in Appleton and how it’s being used in countless ways. For more on Encapsys, read Jessica Thiel’s cover story on page 26.

Industrial hemp, which is used in dozens of ways including the creation of CBD oil, was illegal to grow for decades, but now Wisconsin allows anyone who receives a special license to grow the non-narcotic cousin of marijuana. Hemp has provided farmers with another source of income and business owners like Bob Aykens of Memorial Florists & Greenhouses in Appleton with a way to diversify their income stream. Learn more about the growing hemp and CBD oil industries in this month’s Insight Insider starting on page 35.

Finally, we are just over a week away from Insight’s annual THINC! conference on May 9. The event highlights all things innovation and features Innovationedge founder Cheryl Perkins, whose name is synonymous with innovation, as the keynote speaker. You can read more about her and her thoughts on innovation on page 25. THINC’s other highlight is announcing the winners of the Insight Innovation Awards. This year, we are doing something new and will highlight three finalists in the four categories before announcing the winner. We have a lot of great organizations up for this year’s awards. You’ll be able to read more about the winners in our June issue.
