Classic cars don’t belong in glass cases.
From July 17 to 20, Road America will host its annual event, The HAWK, one of the largest vintage racing events in America for more than 10 years. This year’s show celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, a brand that featured “…some of the most formidable race cars of their time in the ’60s and ’70s, when sports car racing was really at its peak,” John Ewert, communications director for Road America, says.
Roles are reversed as modern vehicles are put on display and classic cars dominate the course in all-vintage races during The HAWK. Modern replicas will compete alongside refurbished originals, and more than 400 entries will compete in 10 classes ranging from Formula Cars to British Classics to Mustang-Only.
Among the entries are cars with established racing histories, including those driven to victory decades ago by racing legends such as George Follmer and Parnelli Jones. Many of these venerated vehicles have been specially prepared for competition along Road America’s four-mile course.
“Instead of just restoring cars and putting them in a collection, you’re seeing more and more owners restoring cars and actually racing them,” Ewert says.
Out-of-state and international guests make up a significant amount of Road America’s 700,000 annual visitors and $100 million economic impact on the Elkhart Lake community. Visit www.roadamerica.com for information and tickets.
