If you’re a business owner, there’s something Ann Hanna wants you to know: It’s a seller’s market as merger and acquisition activity continues to soar.

“Selling a business is the largest financial transaction of a person’s life. You want to make sure you do it right,” says Hanna, managing director and owner of the Taureau Group LLC and moderator of a panel discussion at the 2019 Mergers and Acquisitions Forum, which will be held Oct. 9 at the Lambeau Field Atrium in Green Bay.

Presented by Insight Publications, the forum is designed for business owners as well as professionals who work with business owners.

Education is vital when selling your business, says Corey Vanderpoel, managing director and owner of the Taureau Group LLC.

“It’s a very robust market out there right now, but business owners need to know what to expect and how to improve their business’s value,” says Vanderpoel, one of the panelists who will discuss the M&A market. “When you’re selling a house, for example, you may paint a few rooms to increase its value. If selling a business, you may look to diversify a bit or make sure there’s a strong management team in place to increase value. That can take a while to get in place.”

Vanderpoel says multiple factors are contributing to the robust M&A market. “There are a lot of buyers out there — equity firms looking for businesses to invest in; there’s a lot of corporate cash right now on the balance sheets and a lot of debt financing available. People are looking to buy.”

While the large baby boomer population is reaching or growing closer to retirement age, Hanna says the number of businesses on the market hasn’t increased commensurately. “You would think owners would be selling or getting ready to sell, but we’re finding they are working longer and not quite ready to sell at age 65,” she says.

In addition to a panel discussion on the current M&A market, the forum includes a keynote address from Jack Bennett, the former University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men’s basketball coach, and breakout sessions on increasing the value of your business before a sale, leveraging legal counsel to its maximum value and negotiating beyond the purchase price.
