When transportation regulations changed, J. J. Keller & Associates responded quickly, providing clients an integrated platform for meeting the new requirements.
J. J. Keller’s ability to reinvent its product and processes in a timely way to meet industry needs earned the company an Insight Innovation Award in the category “Process.” The judges were impressed with how the mature, legacy company made a commitment to essentially transform its business model with technology.
“This is about adoption and implementation,” one judge said. “It’s a combination of the two that ultimately transforms the business. They are great role models for this and they’ve done it exceptionally well.”
Since J. J. Keller was founded in 1953, the transportation industry has been a key market for the Neenah-based company. Much of the company’s business is built on advising regulated fleets about how to comply with complex hours of service driving rules, as well as printing and supplying paper logs regulators required them to use to document hours. With the creation of the new rules, the 1,400-employee company recognized it would need to re-engineer its product, processes and facilities.
At the end of 2017, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration changed its requirements for drivers, who must comply with hours of service rules, to use an electronic logging device rather than paper logs. The safety and regulatory compliance solutions company reimagined its approach to innovation. It created an electronic logging platform, including an electronic logging device engineered by J. J. Keller associates in the Fox Valley, the J. J. Keller Mobile smart device app and
the J. J. Keller Encompass online fleet management system. J. J. Keller’s development effort resulted in 10 patents being awarded over four years.
