EXCEL Engineering celebrates 30 years

EXCEL ENGINEERING is celebrating 30 years of business in 2020. Excel is proud of what has been accomplished and is extremely grateful for the long-standing client relationships and the dedicated employee ownership, which has made this milestone possible.

Excel’s story
Excel opened in 1990 in a small office in Campbellsport. The firm provided architectural and structural engineering services to design-build contractors and local cheese production facilities.

Steady growth
Excel grew steadily and quickly became known for superior plans and timely service. In 1993, Excel added civil engineering and surveying and outgrew its Campbellsport office by the end of 1994. A search for a new home began and, at the same time, Excel’s founder Gary Runge sold half of the company to the employees, transforming Excel into an employee-owned firm.
The company found a location in Fond du Lac for its new home and in 1996, construction was completed on its new office building. The company’s staff continued to grow throughout the remainder of the 90s. A cold formed steel structural engineering group was added in 1997 and a mechanical, electrical and plumbing design department followed in 1998 to provide our customers with better coordinated building design solutions.

Always a better plan
By the early 2000s, Excel had developed a strong reputation in the Wisconsin dairy and food processing market. The company began providing services throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to geographic growth, Excel added food processing engineering to complement the existing full-service building design team in 2001, and the Fond du Lac office expanded from 50 to 100 employees in 2003.
In 2006, Runge announced his retirement and the employees purchased his remaining ownership. A new board of directors was formed, and Jeff Quast was elected as the company’s new president. A rebranding effort was launched shortly after the management transition. In 2008, a new logo was adopted along with the tagline, “Always a Better Plan,” which represented Excel’s continued reputation for superior plans and full-service, in-house integrated design solutions.

‘Destination employer’
Excel grew continuously with the addition of interior design, audio/video/security design, precast concrete structural design and refrigeration design. Growth required steady hiring and recruiting high-end talent became a top priority. To meet this challenge, Excel made a commitment in 2013 to become a “Destination Employer.” Employee benefits such as summer hours and flex time were introduced. A fitness center and outdoor activity area were constructed and an employee gathering space was added to encourage a stronger sense of community.
Today, Excel has more than 200 employees and is one of the largest full-service providers of A/E design services in Wisconsin. Excel regularly works across North America in the areas of food processing, manufacturing, churches, retail, multi-family housing, site development, schools, healthcare, hospitality and corporate offices.

Moving into the future
We are as optimistic about the future today as we were 30 years ago. Our focus continues to be to provide the best in-house, integrated design plans in the industry. At Excel, there is Always a Better Plan.
