Family-run, Hmong-owned Union Asian Market reopened under new ownership in 2022, breathing fresh life into a business established more than 40 years ago.
Owner Yeng Yang credits the store’s growth to a variety of factors: It modernized operations with upgraded POS systems, launched a customer loyalty program, secured more competitive pricing and increased product variety.
“One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that growth comes with both challenges and successes,” Yang says. “The key is persistence — never giving up, even when things feel tough.”
Looking ahead, Union Asian Market plans to expand its deli into a cafeteria-style space featuring multiple Asian cuisines.
“By evolving with demographic shifts and community needs, we can position Union Asian Market not only as an Asian grocery store but as a multicultural marketplace that celebrates diversity and provides authentic products for a wider customer base,” Yang says.
