Barb and Chuck Merry
Barb and Chuck Merry are lifelong philanthropists whose generosity, leadership and vision have shaped arts, education and community institutions throughout Northeast Wisconsin. Tireless champions for access and inclusion, the Merrys embody the spirit of lifelong community commitment.
Through their family fund at the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, the Merrys have provided major support to organizations such as the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, YMCA, the Trout Museum of Art, Lawrence University and the Appleton Public Library. Barb played a leadership role in a Rotary Club effort that raised more than $150,000 for the Appleton Public Library Capital Campaign in support of the Children’s Garden, helping create a space that will inspire curiosity and learning for generations to come. At Lawrence University, the couple established a scholarship fund to support future students, especially those who, like Chuck, are first-generation college students.
“Barb and Chuck Merry have shaped the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s legacy from its earliest days,” wrote nominator Maria Van Laanen, president and CEO of the PAC. “Their relationship with the center began even before the building opened to the public, with a generous contribution to the capital campaign and attendance at the 2002 Gala Grand Opening. Barb served on the Board of Directors from 2003 to 2015, and their continued engagement as Trustees since 2015 reflects a decades-long commitment to the mission and success of the organization.”
The Merrys’ passion for accessibility also led to the installation of a hearing loop system in Thrivent Hall.
“Anyone, regardless of background, experience or ability, should feel welcome by available services that enhance their experience,” Barb said. “That approach is living up to the center’s mission statement — to become a multicultural gathering place for the community.”
