When Jason Scruggs bought TBC Metalworks in 2022, it had four employees and was dangerously dependent on a handful of clients, mostly in Wisconsin and surrounding states. Four years later, the Green Bay tube bending shop has 11 employees and works with customers in 20 states, with its single largest account now based in the South.
But growth wasn’t painless, Scruggs says. Shortly after the acquisition, TBC lost its biggest customer and watched its second‑largest pull back sharply. Rather than scramble to win them back, Scruggs leaned into diversification across agriculture, construction, oil and gas, and lawn and garden sectors. The growth strategy is decidedly low‑tech — just respond to RFQs.
“You would be surprised how many stories [we hear] from buyers who say they cannot get responses when they email RFQs to new potential vendors,” Scruggs says. Self‑funded and diversified, TBC is targeting 25–50% annual growth through 2029.
