CARES Fox Cities/Hope & Help Together

After 10 years of teaching and working as an English language instructional coach at Appleton North High School, Lawrence University graduate Hilary Haskell pursued a master’s at Harvard in policy and management with a focus on equitable systems changes. “I knew that I was missing ideas, I was missing information, so I needed to learn more,” she says.

Haskell, who earned that degree in 2021, now leads Hope and Help Together, which developed from conversations with educators, community volunteers, service organizations and faith communities “who have all been investing in supporting immigrants and refugees.”

Additionally, Haskell leads the new CARES Fox Cities (Community-Based Advocacy and Research for Equity in Schooling), which grew out of collaboration with teachers and parents who want to support district efforts to create more culturally responsive programming. The organization focuses on understanding things that students and families are facing “from their perspective and from the belief that people who are closest to our problems in our community are also closest to the solutions,” Haskell says.
