Mary May says her biggest break came when she landed an administrative role on the high school success team for the Oregon Department of Education. In that role, she supported an initiative to increase the state’s graduation rates.
May had endured intense bullying during her senior year of high school and “gave up college plans, chose an alternative method and joined the military. I was in basic combat training while my high school class was graduating.”
She says former educators with whom she worked helped her “to find my purpose in career coaching in counseling. In this role, I was given the opportunity to work with teen moms, which pivoted my entire career and education to focus on serving my community in larger capacities.”
Now at gener8tor, May works with unemployed and underemployed populations, offering free coaching through a six-week curriculum.
May, who has earned her general education diploma (GED), is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in human services from Post University.
