Age: 31

Chief Operating Officer, St. Paul Elder Services, Inc.

Megan Mashl says her family has motivated her “to work hard, to care about the quality of my work, and to care for others.” These are traits that have allowed her to thrive in her chosen profession of elder services, where she says it’s important to be guided by your values and practice authentic leadership.

Mashl, who is a licensed nursing home administrator and holds a master’s degree in health care administration, joined St. Paul Elder Services in 2017 and was promoted to COO last year. She says a big part of her career growth has been not shying away from challenges.

“Be open to learning and step into situations you may not be experienced in or comfortable in,” she advises. “Confidence and growth come from experience.”

Hidden talents: I love interior design, but I also know how to decorate cakes and cookies!

Biggest professional challenge right now: A significant challenge we face is staffing, especially nursing roles. We are creating a culture of shared leadership — a place where everyone has a voice and feels valued, creating a culture of generosity.

Best advice received: Leadership is not a position; it’s the values and traits you demonstrate.
