A new proposal would require meat or seafood that is cultivated in a lab to be labeled as “lab-grown meat” if it’s sold at Wisconsin restaurants or stores, Wisconsin Public Radio reports.

The bill was authored by state Rep. Clint Moses and state Sen. Romaine Quinn.

While lab-grown meat is not yet on grocery store shelves, the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2023 granted approval to two companies that cultivate chicken meat from animal cells in a lab, setting the stage for its expansion.

Lawmakers in multiple states have enacted bans or laws setting label requirements preemptively.
