The Wisconsin Department of Health Services blocked the sale of three SSM Health nursing homes — including one in Madison — to a for-profit New Jersey company.

The department cited Complete Care’s “history of noncompliance” with regulations in its decision to deny the company’s application to buy the nursing homes, which include 184-bed St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison, Dane County’s largest nursing home; 102-bed St. Clare Meadows in Baraboo; and 50-bed Christian Home and Rehabilitation Center in Waupun.

Both SSM Health and Complete Care are appealing the decision.
