The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) on Friday announced that Direct File, the new free option for filing federal taxes, is available for Wisconsin taxpayers. The individual income tax filing season begins on Jan. 27.
Direct File is a free IRS program that offers a secure way for eligible Wisconsin taxpayers to file their federal income tax returns electronically. Direct File integrates with WisTax, DOR’s free online tax preparation software. Both platforms are mobile friendly. Direct File automatically imports the verified information from a federal return to WisTax, eliminating the need to complete W-2s, 1099s, and additional forms twice. Not only does this save time; it reduces the likelihood of errors.
