Evers signs bill updating criminal code for AI misuse

Gov. Tony Evers signed a bipartisan bill ensuring Wisconsin’s criminal code is updated to reflect the increasing use and potential misuse of artificial intelligence.

Senate Bill 33, now 2025 Wisconsin Act 34:

  • Expands the crime of representations depicting nudity; 

  • Defines “synthetic intimate representation”;

  • Prohibits posting, publishing, distributing or exhibiting a synthetic intimate representation of an identifiable person with intent to harass or intimidate them; and 

  • Prohibits making a reproduction of a private representation of an individual if they did not consent to the making of the reproduction.

The bill will take effect the day after publication.
