Gov. Tony Evers on Wednesday released a statement condemning the actions of Republican candidate for governor U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany and members of the Wisconsin State Legislature, who rejected a bipartisan plan to use a portion of the state’s surplus to invest in Wisconsin’s K-12 schools, provide property tax relief statewide and help working families afford rising costs.

The proposal, announced earlier this week by Evers, Wisconsin State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos,R-Rochester, and Wisconsin State Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu,R-Oostburg, would have invested over $600 million in Wisconsin’s K-12 schools, including providing the largest increase to the state’s special education reimbursement rate in state history to attain 50%.

It would also have invested over $300 million in general school aids; provided tens of millions of dollars in statewide property tax relief through Wisconsin Technical College System aid; made direct payments to Wisconsin’s working families and eliminated state income tax on tipped and overtime income.

“Tom Tiffany and a few Republican and Democratic lawmakers chose to blow up a bipartisan plan to invest in our K-12 schools, lower property taxes and help working families afford rising costs, all because they’d rather do what’s best for the next election than what’s right for the people of our state,” said Evers in a statement. “So many Wisconsinites feel left behind, frustrated, and disillusioned by politics these days because they think a lot of politicians in the Capitol are only here to serve themselves. And, today, they’re right.”
