A federal law banning the sale of hemp products will begin in November unless legislative action is taken.
Wisconsin’s hemp industry is estimated to have $700 million in economic impact in the state and it supports nearly 3,500 jobs.
Wisconsin has been unable to legalize hemp products at a state level, meaning the industry and its jobs would cease to exist if the law goes into effect.
Gov. Tony Evers sent a letter to the Wisconsin Congressional delegation asking it to work with colleagues to find a legislative solution.
“Restrictive changes to the hemp definition will only drive commerce for hemp-derived products across state lines, shifting jobs and tax revenue away from Wisconsin,” Evers said in a statement.
