What has been the most rewarding part of your professional journey so far?
For myself, it’s been the growth I’ve been able to accomplish while experiencing businesses and communities grow around me. It is a humbling experience to see communities take shape and to watch business and ideas grow and develop.
What do you wish more people understood about your field or industry?
I wish more people understood the impact tourism can have on a small area, even if you don’t consider the area you live in to be a travel destination. I think it’s really important to take the time to explore your community as if you were visiting it. Being a tourist in your own neighborhood helps you better understand the niche things your area has to offer.
Can you share one of the most significant challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame it?
As a young professional, a significant challenge I’ve faced time and time again is not being met with the same respect as more senior colleagues. These experiences act as a catalyst for me to grow stronger — to continue to show my capabilities and rise above initial judgement instead of letting it stall me or discourage me from continuing. This has also pushed me to keep inviting other, younger professionals to the table.
What is one cause or issue that you’re especially passionate about, and why?
Education and workforce development! Through both personal and professional avenues, I have become increasingly more passionate about how education is presented prior to graduation and how it effects our current workforce. I hear and see stories about this is affecting our local businesses firsthand.
What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference in their communities?
Listen. What perceptions do others have about your community? What do other community members like and dislike? When someone new comes to your community, what is their first impression? Keeping your ears open and asking questions can really help identify the most impactful ways you can make a difference in your community.
What legacy do you hope to leave, both in your career and in your community?
I want to see the communities around me set up for success and have the tools and resources they need to grow and flourish. If I can lend a helping hand or create positive experiences for others in that way, then I will be happy.
