Jacob Warden, president of Hurckman Mechanical Industries Inc.

What has been the most rewarding part of your professional journey so far?

The best part in being in construction is seeing your project to completion. When driving by your finished projects like schools and hospitals and businesses, it’s a neat feeling to see what your hard work became. In my roles on the executive side, it’s also a neat feeling to see those that you see potential in make it to the next stage in their career.

What is one cause or issue that you’re especially passionate about, and why?

In my recent roles, I have become increasingly aware of the importance of mental health and proper care. Every leadership class I’ve taken has addressed this critical issue. Understanding and giving people the benefit of the doubt can greatly influence outcomes. Mental health plays a vital role in keeping individuals motivated, and as managers, it’s crucial to acknowledge this both in and outside their work lives.

What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference in their communities?

It may sound cliche, but the saying goes, “You have two ears and one mouth for a reason.” It’s essential to listen to people’s concerns and needs. Building relationships, communicating clearly, and following through on promises are crucial. Hurckman’s motto is ‘No Empty Promises,’ and those are powerful words to live by both in and outside of work.

What’s a failure or setback you experienced that ended up being a stepping stone to something greater?

As a project manager, I experienced failures where I overlooked key items, letting those around me down. Mistakes are an inherent part of our journey, and as we progress in our careers, our goal is to learn from them and avoid repetition. By adopting this approach with my team at Hurckman, we create an environment where we’re not afraid of making errors; instead, we learn from them and share our insights with peers to enhance the overall success of the company

What legacy do you hope to leave, both in your career and in your community?

As the president of Hurckman, I aspire to be viewed as a leader who not only promotes growth and nurtures talent, but also actively seeks to unlock the full potential of every employee. I believe that having a motivated and empowered team is paramount to achieving our goals. Moreover, being in the construction industry provides us with a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact in the communities we serve.
