Q: What’s a failure or setback you experienced that ended up being a stepping stone to something greater?

With failure to secure a job in marketing, I took a role that I didn’t even apply for, but one that ended up being far greater than I could have imagined. Working with PULSE and those tied to it has been a beautiful, positive impact on my life and has given me the tools needed to continue to pursue growth and opportunity as I transition into a new role.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your professional journey so far?

The most rewarding thing has been building relationships and connecting people. It is so rewarding seeing the success of others as they work toward their goals, either personally or professionally.

Q: Can you share one of the most significant challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame it?

My resume. As a teacher, you have tons of skills that others may not see. To overcome this, I had to work hard at understanding my skillset and making the language clear on how that can be applied to a particular job. Also, I had to work hard to build and foster meaningful relationships so that people could see who I am and the caliber of my work and ability and take that into account for future jobs, promotions, etc.

Q: What is one cause or issue that you’re especially passionate about, and why?

The child care crisis. Being a working mom with a young son, it was imperative to find care, and the fact that I had to start looking as soon as I found out I was pregnant was a heavy burden. Until daycare is seen for the institution that it is and given the proper funding and support from government and community, how can we hope to keep parents in the workforce and children prepared for the school years to come?

Q: What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference in their communities?

Find your passion and then something that allows you to live that out. Don’t get involved with an organization just to get involved. You’ll make the most difference in your community when what you are doing ties into what you love.
