John Wagner — Controller, Miron Construction Co. Inc.
What has been the most rewarding part of your professional journey so far?
Leading a really capable accounting team at Miron. It’s a large team and full of personalities, and the managers who lead each respective group within it are so capable and intelligent. We really get to focus on the broader and more impactful challenges because there’s 100% confidence that all of the little, but critical, day-to-day items are being done well.
What role do you think young leaders like yourself play in shaping the future of communities?
We get to be conduits to connect the organizations we work for to the community organizations we’re involved with. Northeast Wisconsin is full of great companies that are extremely generous whenever they’re called to action. It’s our job as young leaders to really be in our communities, find where the needs are, and connect the resources in our networks to those needs.
What is one cause or issue that you’re especially passionate about, and why?
I serve on three boards in the community, and every single one of them are either entirely focused on or at least partially focused on kids. The world has always had its challenges, but the last five years in particular really seem to be tumultuous. That’s very hard on kids, and so I love being part of organizations that make a difference in their lives.
What advice would you give to others looking to make a difference in their communities?
You don’t have to be on a board, lead a committee/event, or anything of the sort to make a difference. The butterfly effect is real, and every small good work and single dollar can make a major difference that you may or may not ever see.
What legacy do you hope to leave, both in your career and in your community?
They are one and the same: I want to be known as a person who could be trusted to help, to give good guidance, and to do it without the need for grand recognition or being “the face.”
