Tim Muldoon: Commercial Underwriter, Acuity Insurance
Can you share one of the most significant challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame it?
After making a career change from teaching to the insurance industry, I’ve been in three different departments for one company (all by choice). Thus, I’ve started over from scratch on many occasions. Starting over can be a difficult concept to accept, but I try to utilize my experience from each position to make larger gains within a shorter timeframe.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Beyond spending time with my spouse and two daughters, my passion is running and biking. I participate in several endurance events throughout the year, most often half- or full-marathons, sometimes triathlons. I’ll often participate in these events as a Pacer (someone who runs at a specific pace to help other runners) or with myTeamTriumph.
Looking back, what personal experiences or milestones have had the greatest influence on your professional success?
Completing my first Ironman-distance triathlon in 2018 and my first 100-mile ultramarathon in 2021. In these types of events, it’s a you-versus-you mentality. There’s no such thing as a “perfect race,” which helps you from a problem-solving standpoint—keeping your cool in times of a difficult situation. Completing these events have given me the confidence to take on different challenges throughout my career.
What is one cause or issue that you’re especially passionate about, and why?
Building inclusive communities. People now have the ability to connect with others on a global scale in an instant, but yet we are seeing elevated levels of loneliness. There’s a reason why I prefer participating in races, rather than running out the front door of my house—people from different backgrounds and experiences running together on the same course. This is one of the reasons why I’m an advocate of myTeamTriumph. It’s an organization that provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in endurance events they might not have otherwise experienced.
What legacy do you hope to leave, both in your career and in your community?
I want to be known as someone who had a genuine care for others and their successes. To be someone who says they’ll do something, and then do it—acknowledging promises to others and myself. And to be one of the first on the dance floor.
