For many of us, the end of the year is marked by financial activities like reviewing income statements and balance sheets, comparing budgeted figures with actuals and forecasting for the year ahead.
If numbers aren’t your game, this time of year can feel extremely overwhelming. This is why I’m so thankful for financial pros like our cover subject Paul Baniel, who manage their organization’s finances year-round so the rest of us can focus on what we do best.
This month’s cover story highlights the distinguished career of Baniel, retiring vice president of finance and administration for the Green Bay Packers. With stints at both the Packers and Milwaukee Brewers, Baniel is the first to admit that he has had an enviable career. “You know, I’ve had a dream career path for an accountant who lives in Wisconsin,” he said during our interview.
Baniel was recently honored with Insight’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award during our Dec. 5 CFO of the Year event at Lambeau Field, a venue that holds special significance for Baniel.
Susan Finco, president of Leonard & Finco Public Relations, has served on the Packers’ board of directors since 2000 and has worked with Paul since he joined the franchise in 2009. She was one of Baniel’s award nominators and says he breaks all the stereotypes about stuffy, humorless accountants.
“Not only is he brilliant, but he’s just a good person,” she says. “He’s the guy you want overseeing all your financial projects, but he’s also the guy you want to sit down and have a beer with.”
I have to say I agree with Susan. Turn to page 24 to read about the pivotal moments that shaped Baniel’s career and the enduring legacy he leaves behind in the world of sports finance.
In addition to celebrating Baniel’s Lifetime Achievement nod, Insight recognized 30 other financial leaders at our first-ever CFO of the Year event. These individuals have demonstrated exceptional financial stewardship and innovation, not only navigating the complexities of their respective industries but also setting new benchmarks for financial excellence. Head to page 31 to get to know each of the finalists. I think you will be as impressed as I was by their stories.
As we at Insight reflect on the whirlwind that was 2023, I want to extend deep gratitude to all our readers and supporters. Thank you for being a part of the Insight community.
Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
