Authenticity matters more than ever — especially in recruitment, says Cal Bynoe, who brings this approach to his work at Employment Resource Group. From Navy recruiting to health care staffing, the Brooklyn native has seen every side of the talent game. Bynoe was recently named to the 2026 Wisconsin Titan 100, recognizing CEOs and C-level executives throughout the state.

What’s the most powerful lesson from your military experience that you apply to your work today?

Bynoe: Leadership is about service, not authority. You learn quickly that titles don’t earn you respect, your actions do. In high pressure situations, people look to their leaders to stay calm, to take responsibility, to put their team’s success in front of their own. Whether it’s working with a client or guiding a candidate through a career-defining transition, you have to focus on that trust, accountability and follow-through because real leadership is about enabling others to perform at their best.

What are you seeing in terms of talent expectations, and how can businesses adapt?

There’s absolutely a shift happening right now. The best leaders today are looking for alignment not just in compensation, but in culture, flexibility and purpose. The pandemic redefined the priorities of a lot of executives. For companies that means the old playbook of “let’s just find someone who can do the job,” that no longer works. To attract top talent, businesses need to clearly articulate why they exist and how they support their people.

What’s a common mistake companies make when building leadership teams?

Too often companies hire for experience instead of potential or culture alignment. They’ll find someone who checks the boxes but doesn’t necessarily share their organizational values or leadership style. The mismatch eventually will cost them time, morale and maybe even performance. The best hires aren’t always the obvious ones. They’re people whose skills and character align with where the company wants to go, not where they currently are.

What excites you most about the future of recruiting?

I am excited to see what technology is going to do. Right now we’re scratching the surface of it. At ERG we use data for a lot of analytics and AI-driven sourcing. We do digital assessments to streamline our search process, identifying candidates who we might not have seen on LinkedIn or the job boards. Technology helps us to surface the “what,” but the “why” is the relationship piece of it.

The 2026 Wisconsin Titan 100 will be honored at an awards ceremony Jan. 29 at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum.
