Growth by design, not chance

Local news about the companies, people and issues that impact business in Northeast Wisconsin and beyond.

When I joined a group of Northeast Wisconsin leaders for the 2026 Fox Cities Chamber Leadership Exchange, I did not know exactly what to expect. The trip took us to Charleston, South Carolina, a city many people know for its charm, history and coastal beauty. But what stood out was how Charleston became the community it is today.

Years ago, Charleston faced the closure of its naval base, which had been one of the region’s largest employers. Local leaders could have focused on the loss. Instead, what propelled the city forward was the moment when they looked around, recognized their shared opportunity and chose to move in the same direction. It became a story of alignment and the steady work of moving forward together. That intentional focus helped set the stage for the growth the city continues to experience today.

And while the Fox Cities is not facing a crisis, there is something in Charleston’s approach that feels relevant for where we are right now. We are a region that wants to grow. We want to welcome new families, support strong businesses, attract talent and create a place where people can imagine their future.

I see so many strengths here at home. I see safe communities, beautiful natural spaces and four seasons that offer something for everyone. I see a kind of year‑round quality of life that often surprises people discovering our region for the first time. I see neighbors who still look out for one another. I see businesses that care deeply about the places they serve.

I see opportunity everywhere.

Our region has a strong foundation, but growth does not happen simply because we hope for it. It happens when we understand who we are and when we talk openly about where we want to go. Momentum begins when people gather around the same table, listen to one another and find shared priorities. It grows through collaboration across communities, industries and interests. And it strengthens every time we choose, together, to move forward.

At Insight, this kind of conversation has always been at the heart of our work. Our mission is to inform and connect the leaders of Northeast Wisconsin, and this year we are leaning even more into that purpose. We are focused on creating space for future‑focused conversations that will shape what comes next for the Fox Cities and the larger Northeast Wisconsin community. And now, more than ever, it means making room for the conversations that will define our next decade.

If you are a business or community leader who is thinking about the future, I would love to hear from you. Insight is committed to elevating local voices and fostering the dialogue that helps our region grow. Insight has long been a trusted place where conversations begin, and my hope is to continue building on that strength by welcoming even more voices to the table.

Charleston showed us that strong futures are not created by chance. They are created by choice. And I believe we have that opportunity here.

I look forward to building ours with you.
