The name of the game this month is “growth” — from the region’s top 25 fastest growing companies to a statewide industry experiencing expansion opportunities, you will find abundant examples of growth in this issue of Insight.

For starters, Insight debuted its new awards program, Fastest Growing Companies, Feb. 29. These companies represent the driving force behind economic expansion in our region. During the awards ceremony at Lambeau Field, we unveiled the numerically ranked order of the top 25 companies for the first time. Turn to page 27 for the full list of this year’s Fastest Growing Companies in the New North region.

One that ranked high on the list also happens to be featured on this month’s cover: U.S. Venture. The Kimberly-headquartered company had been a bit reluctant to take the spotlight, but as it embarks on a new era their team decided it was the right time to share U.S. Venture’s story in Insight — and we couldn’t be more excited.

Last month longtime President and CEO John Schmidt retired, and former COO Eric Kessenich, John’s nephew, took over leadership of the $14 billion company. As John transitions to his role as board chairman and Eric settles in as U.S. Venture’s new president and CEO, the company has no plans of slowing down. In fact, they may just be speeding up — especially as they look to lead the renewable energy transition.

Speaking of booming business, on page 44 you can learn about one particular industry that is experiencing impressive movement: Wisconsin’s wine industry. According to a National Economic Impact Study of the American Wine Industry, the industry has a whopping $4.54 billion economic impact in the state.

Contributing writer Lori Kaye Lodes spoke with some of the players in the region about what is driving this growth, as legislative changes going into effect this spring could increase the ability of winemakers to expand.

On page 47, you will see a familiar byline. Former Insight editor MaryBeth Matzek contributed this month’s talent feature, which explores how local businesses can create a workforce pipeline utilizing youth apprenticeships and the Inspire Wisconsin Network. It’s a must-read if talent attraction and retention are top priorities for your company.
