New North, Inc. has been working with 10 of the region’s higher education institutions for the past several months to launch a new campaign promoting the importance of education to foster a strong and diverse workforce.
Colleges and universities play a crucial role in equipping students with critical thinking skills to help solve real-world problems with the ability to analyze, evaluate and synthesize information.
Significant research points to the connection between innovation and education, and as technology continues to evolve, universities will remain at the forefront of discovery and transformation:
• A 2023 Brookings Institution analysis found that increased state funding to research universities correlates with higher levels of local patenting and entrepreneurship.
• In 2023, R&D spending by U.S. academia institutions increased more than 11%, fueling innovation and development of a skilled workforce, according to the National Center for Science & Engineering Statistics, Higher Education Development Survey.
• World Economic Forum’s 2023 Future of Jobs Survey reveals that more than 70% of companies anticipate a growing demand for creative and analytical thinking skills, something that higher ed institutions continuously foster.
Some of the world’s most successful companies were founded by university students who were empowered to be creative and curious, while leveraging research and experiential learning.
