Schools and builders can register now for a hands-on event hosted by the Brown County Home Builders Association that will showcase the skilled trades industry for 500 high school students.
The first Build My Future Brown County will be held Oct. 15, at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. The event’s goal is to increase students’ interest in the trades to create a pipeline of workers for the construction industry.
“We want to put in the students’ minds that these are cool jobs and that they can make a good living from them,” said Pam Sylvester, program coordinator for BCHBA. “The construction industry has seen a workforce shortage for a while now and we see this as a great opportunity to expose more students to what’s available.”
Build My Future Brown County is looking for exhibitors from the construction industry, but in particular from concrete, heavy equipment/machinery, excavating, HVAC, landscaping and masonry.
Registration for exhibitors as well as sponsors, participating schools and volunteers is open through Aug. 6.
Nicole Selner of Alair Homes Green Bay, said, “Some kids like to be hands-on and might not need formal schooling right off the bat. Some do and then come to the trades after, and that’s great too,” she said. “This day is all about exposing students to careers they may not know much about and creating a pipeline of workers for the industry.”
