Insight wins four national awards in journalism, design

Insight Publications won four national awards in the 2024 Alliance of Area Business Publishers Editorial Excellence Awards competition. The awards were presented Friday, June 21 during the AABP’s summer conference held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The annual competition, which is coordinated and judged by faculty in the University of Missouri School of Journalism, recognizes editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in regional business publications.

Insight won a gold award in the Best Feature, Single Story category for small publications for its July 2023 cover story on KI written by editor Amelia Compton Wolff. Judges commented: “Strong details propel this story about how a company that produced folding chairs became a leader in educational furniture. The writer seamlessly weaves together engaging quotes and impressive statistics to capture the spirit of an innovative company.”

Insight’s Home Made feature, with entries written by editors Amelia Compton Wolff and Kate Bruns, received a silver award for Best Recurring Feature in the small publications category. Judges commented: “The subjects of these company bios are an intriguing mix of characters and commercial ventures. From condiment producers to crane fabricators, each profile is a lesson in precision reporting and deft editing that delivers maximum impact in a tight space.”

In the Best Use of Photography/Illustrations-Magazine category, Insight won a silver award with judges commenting “The entry is full of high-energy visual treatment for topics ranging from cows to fashion. The … opening spreads showcase smart visual editing in collaboration with design. Documentary photos included on subsequent pages round out the visual storytelling.”

Insight won a bronze award in the Best Cover-Magazine category for its March 2023 cover featuring Pine River Cheese. Judges commented: “Bright colors, a proud subject, and a humorous and conceptual take on success evokes a smile. The dramatically lit photograph, combined with a color palette that complements the subject’s retro attire, results in an outstanding visual pop of excitement. The choice of typography is creatively fitting for the playful theme.”
