Living longer, working smarter

Local news about the companies, people and issues that impact business in Northeast Wisconsin and beyond.

Move over, March Madness basketball. I was recently amused when Business Insider ran its own bracket‑style tournament of business trends in which the emerging longevity industry claimed the No. 1 spot. It’s not hard to see why.

People are living — and working — longer. According to the World Health Organization, between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22%.

Longevity trends are shifting the conversation away from disease‑focused health care to addressing the root causes of aging, which you can see play out in a variety of ways. Gen Z is more interested in fibermaxxing — a trendy way of saying eating more fiber — than drinking alcohol. Wearable tech and smart home devices like Kohler Health’s Dekoda, which tracks health patterns over time, are moving from novelty to necessity.

For employers in Northeast Wisconsin, this shift raises a real question: How do you build a workplace that supports an aging and increasingly health‑conscious workforce?

On May 13, the De Pere Chamber of Commerce is tackling those questions head on with its Health & Wellness in the Workplace Symposium. The event will feature three expert panels discussing topics across areas such as preventative health and workplace readiness, integrative recovery and holistic health maintenance, and physical and nutritional wellness. If you’re an HR director, business owner or benefits manager, you’ll want to be there.

Insight will be there, too, and in partnership with the De Pere Chamber will be announcing a new recognition program honoring the frontline workers and health care leaders quietly making a difference in the health of our region. More details to come at the symposium.

A business trend tournament got us thinking: Should Insight run a similar bracket for Northeast Wisconsin? Our vote is yes. Drop us a note and let us know yours.
