Mercury Marine has notified 1,700 hourly employees at its Fond du Lac facility that there will be temporary layoffs between now and the end of the year.

The company said declining sales will result in six, one-week production shutdowns. Employees will be eligible for unemployment during the layoff.

Earlier this year, Mercury announced plans to cut 300 positions in June and July. At the time, the company said the layoffs would be accompanied by “adjustments to overall operations.”

The company said high interest rates and slower consumer demand were the reasons for the layoffs.
