Microsoft announced that it has completed construction of the first data center at its campus in Mount Pleasant, and the facility is now fully operational, according to BizTimes Milwaukee.
“Wisconsin is now home to the world’s most powerful supercomputer,” said Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft. “This campus will help power the next generation of AI innovation globally and provide long-term economic opportunity locally through hundreds of highly skilled jobs and continued investment in the region.”
In 2024, the company announced plans to build a $3.3 billion artificial intelligence data center in Mount Pleasant at a site northwest of 90th Street and 1st Street/state Highway 195 originally intended for Foxconn. After the Foxconn project was built far smaller than originally planned, the land was made available for other users, and Microsoft stepped forward.
The company first announced plans in March of 2023 for a $1 billion data center on a 315-acre site. But those plans later evolved, and grew substantially.
Microsoft says it has nearly 550 full-time employees working at the Mount Pleasant data center that is now fully operational. The company said it and its contractors are actively hiring and expect employment at the facility to continue to grow over time.
The company says it has directly purchased from 29 businesses in 11 Wisconsin counties including construction suppliers in Racine County, contractors and steel fabricators in Outagamie and Marathon counties, electrical equipment manufacturers in Rock and Columbia counties and machinery manufacturers in La Crosse County.
