An indoor electric go kart track has opened in Green Bay just blocks from Lambeau Field.

Zac Bryner opened Midwest Super Speedway April 17 after toying with the idea of building an outdoor track in northern Wisconsin for four wheelers. He discovered indoor kart racing and decided that was a better direction. After spending some time taking business courses, Bryner found a space in Green Bay that was affordable and ideally suited for construction of a quarter-mile track.

It was essentially an empty warehouse reducing site preparation costs and allowing for a build out of amenities, some still to come. Bryner, a project manager with an engineering degree, assembled a team and vendors to build the track beginning in November.

There are 20 adult and 10 junior go-carts that can reach speeds of up to 45 mph around the 40,000-square-foot track. On a recent day drivers were traveling around 30 mph.

Participants complete an electronic registration form including a release, are equipped with a headsock and helmet and given a short tutorial on kart operation. The karts are tracked electronically and each driver makes 10 laps that are timed, allowing groups to compete against each other and against anyone else who has raced at the track.

There is a video game arcade and coming soon there will be a conference room and a deck giving spectators a birdseye view of the track.

The 70,000-square-foot space allows for future expansion and the largely blank walls will eventually feature sponsors.

Bryner said the speedway will be able to handle groups, competitive leagues and individuals throughout the year. He anticipates the staff of 17 will grow to 25 in the coming weeks.
