New Leaf Foods announces the return of its Grassroots in the Garden: Building Community program for 2026, a series of free community workshops open to the public that teach people how to care for edible gardens.

The first session of this year will take place Feb. 5, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College sustainable agricultural greenhouse, located near parking lot 5 behind the Green Bay Botanical Gardens. This workshop will focus on winter seed sowing ground cover seeds to be planted later in Seymour Park Food Forest.

Grassroots in the Garden Mentor Dillon Weist returns to fill the role of instructor at these workshops. Many seeds need a cold period to germinate. Come and learn what plants can be started now for planting when the weather warms up. The ground cover seeds we plant now will be used at Seymour Park Food Forest as a mulch to suppress weeds in the future and conserve water, as well as attract pollinators. Anyone interested in attending the winter seed sowing ground cover workshop can sign up here.

The second Grassroots in the Garden: Building Community Workshop has been scheduled Feb. 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Seymour Park Food Forest. In this free session, Grassroots mentor Dillon Weist will walk through the how, what, and when of pruning plants for optimal growth. He’ll also be presenting on how to protect plants from pests with fences.
