Winnebago Media Group which owns and operates the Oshkosh Herald, Neenah News, and Winneconne News is shifting to a nonprofit business model.
Founder and publisher Karen Schneider says the business transitioned to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit model to support the long-term sustainability and operate more efficiently.
According to Schneider the papers, which have been supported by advertising, reach 55,000 households a month. She cited increased costs for postage and printing among the challenges for the media group. The papers had been mailed to homes at no cost to subscribers.
Schneider says that shifting to a nonprofit membership model allows people to support the publications and claim a tax deduction.
