Opportunities amid obstacles

Local news about the companies, people and issues that impact business in Northeast Wisconsin and beyond.

I’ve spent the last two-plus years at Insight interviewing a lot of business leaders and some consistent traits have emerged. A mindset that seems to be shared by many of the most successful is they believe that challenges are not just obstacles to overcome — they are opportunities to sharpen skills, rethink strategies and emerge stronger. No one holds this belief more than this month’s cover subject, Dr. Ashwani Bhatia, CEO of Green Bay’s BayCare Clinic.

I was extremely moved during my interview with Dr. Bhatia, who joined BayCare in 2019 just months before the COVID-19 pandemic. He spoke candidly about some of the incredible challenges — both personally and professionally — he has faced during his journey as an Indian immigrant, father to a child dealing with serious illness and a health care leader during a global pandemic.

Dr. Bhatia’s story, and that of BayCare Clinic, demonstrates that challenges are often the catalysts for growth and innovation. Read more on page 24 and learn how difficult experiences have shaped Dr. Bhatia’s approach as the CEO of the largest physician-owned specialty care clinic in the region.

A couple features not to miss this month: associate editor Kate Bruns’ Insider feature (page 44) on the challenges impacting local grocers and how they are adapting to meet changing demands; contributor Lori Kaye Lodes’ banking report (page 48) covering merchant services and payment solutions; and our For the Love feature (page 23) on the Weis Earth Science Museum as it faces an uncertain future on the UWO Fox Cities campus that is slated to close next summer.

Insight’s CFO of the Year Award recipients are also featured in this issue. This year our judges selected 14 financial professionals from across the region to recognize at the awards ceremony Dec. 3 in Green Bay. More than 200 attendees gathered at Lambeau Field for a celebratory evening including drinks, hors d’oeuvres and special recognition of lifetime achievement honoree Mark Radue. We also honored four individuals for their exceptional work in the categories of mentor, risk management, growth and community service. Turn to page 31 to read their stories.

As we close out 2024, I would like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who flipped through an issue of Insight on Business, sponsored or attended an Insight event, subscribed to our daily news email or was interviewed for one of our stories. You enable Insight to uplift and inform our business community. You are our community, and we couldn’t do this without you.

Wishing you warmth this holiday season
