Women at Work, a storytelling project of Neenah-based Graham Images in partnership with the advocacy organization empowHER Wisconsin, is seeking applications from women in the building and construction trades who want to share their stories.
Women at Work is all about shining a light on women working in the architecture, engineering and construction community — an industry statistically dominated by men, explains photographer Graham Washatka of Graham Images, who captured initial portraits that were exhibited during Women in Construction Week March 7 in Appleton.
Reinforcing the message, “If you see it, you can be it,” the project celebrates and showcases women who are creating our built environment in Northeast Wisconsin, Washatka says.
Washatka says the idea for Women at Work sprung from his years of experience contracting with the construction industry as a photographer and seeing often just one woman on a job site.
“You know, seeing these women, just having a photojournalist background, [I was] like, ‘Huh? I wonder what their day is like?'” he says. Through the process of creating Women at Work, he says he has uncovered great stories and hopes to find more.
