NEW Manufacturing Insights, a joint podcast of the Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance (NEWMA) and Insight on Manufacturing (IOM) magazine sponsored by Wintrust Commercial Banking at Town Bank, N.A., unpacks the March Insight on Manufacturing “back office” feature about the NEWMA Safety Task Force on its latest episode, available now wherever you listen to podcasts.
Joining co-hosts Ann Franz and Kate Bruns in studio were Mark Callow, operations manager with Samuel Pressure Vessel Group, and Mike Winkler, Samuel Engineered Systems’ group environmental health and safety manager, both of whom are based out of Marinette. Callow and Winkler are serving as co-chairs of the new task force, which already has more than 40 members and is diving headfirst into a wide variety of issues, including OSHA compliance.
Callow said he initially approached Franz about creating the task force after seeing the number of young people Samuel was hiring: “We’ve been bringing a lot of new and younger people into the workforce, and it scared me — it really did,” he tells the co-hosts.
Throughout the episode, Callow and Winkler talk about some of the strategies they have implemented at Samuel, which have centered around listening to employees, and the reasons the task force is useful and meaningful, which also center around mutually beneficial conversations.
“It’s a journey, and it’s a journey we like to do together,” Callow says, “continuing to push the status quo on what’s acceptable and what’s not acceptable.”
