The New Community Shelter, a trusted nonprofit serving adults experiencing homelessness in Brown County, was recently targeted by a scam.

While the nonprofit did not lose any funds, the organization went from celebrating the generosity of the community to recognizing the challenges it faces in today’s digital environment.

“This was incredibly disappointing, and sad to know that even a local homeless shelter is not immune to a scam,” said Terri Refsguard, CEO of the New Community Shelter. “We rely on the generosity of donors to make our work possible. For someone to misuse that trust is frustrating, but it won’t deter us from moving forward with our mission.”

The New Community Shelter has launched a $14 milliuon capital campaign to construct a 41-unit supportive housing complex in Green Bay. The shelter will serve individuals who have completed the structured shelter program but still need stable, supportive housing to maintain their progress—especially those dealing with mental health or addiction challenges

At the same time, the organization continues to raise its annual budget to keep vital programs like the Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living, and Community Meal Program running.

More than 88% of the Shelter’s funding comes from individuals, businesses, and community organizations.
