The next Stories from Experience event by Schreiber Institute for Women’s Leadership will feature MaiKou Heu, principal at Johnston Elementary/Hmong American Immersion School.

Heu’s story is one of resilience, purpose, and impact. After immigrating to the U.S. at age 2 and growing up in Appleton, she experienced firsthand the challenges of being a dual language learner at a time when schools were still learning how to support multilingual students. Those early experiences shaped her lifelong commitment to education and student advocacy.

Today, Heu erves as principal of Johnston Elementary School/HAIS and brings a background in counseling, administration, and leadership—grounded in both professional expertise and lived experience.

She will share her story May 14 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Johnston Elementary, 2725 E. Forest St., Appleton. The event is free for members. Nonmembers may attend two events free before joining. Register here.
