Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson is lobbying for Amtrak to extend passenger rail service to the city.

Sorenson met with a regional representative from Amtrak recently building on previous discussions the he has held with Amtrak officials regarding the potential for improved rail connectivity and expanded transportation options for the community.

At the state level, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is also developing its Rail Plan 2050, a long-range strategy focused on strengthening rail infrastructure, improving connectivity, and supporting economic growth throughout the state.

“Sheboygan is ideally positioned for passenger rail connectivity. Expanding rail service would provide significant benefits for residents, businesses, and tourism while strengthening regional mobility. Located directly along an existing rail corridor, Sheboygan offers a strong, built-in ridership base that can support passenger rail service for the long term,” said Sorenson.

Sorenson said, “This project is going to be a long-term initiative that is going to require a lot of advocacy from businesses, community leaders, and residents if we are able to get this to the finish line. It will truly need to be a community effort.”
