For this month’s Insider feature on the future of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices in the private sector, writer Nikki Kallio reached out to a total of 18 businesses as potential sources.
She ended up with four who agreed to speak on the topic, but she was turned down — or completely ignored — by 14.
I’m happy to report that it is exceptionally rare to be turned down by 77% of sources, at least in my time with Insight. To put it in perspective, it’s unusual if one a month opts out, let alone 14 for one story.
Some editors might take that lackluster response as a sign that the story is dead on arrival, with little interest from the business community. But in this case, I took it as a sign that there is a story desperately needing to be told.
Truthfully, I understand the silence. As the Trump administration has eliminated all traces of DEI across the federal government, it has also intensified oversight of DEI programs for organizations holding federal contracts. With increasing threats of legal risks, regulatory scrutiny and possible stakeholder backlash, it makes sense why companies may want to keep their DEI initiatives under wraps. There is a lot on the line.
But I’m grateful to those who chose to speak on the record and share how their businesses are navigating this uncertain landscape, whether that means they are reassessing or recommitting to DEI initiatives.
For the companies willing to speak with us for this story, it’s clear DEI has never been about giving certain individuals an unfair advantage in the workplace. At its core, DEI is about expanding access and opportunity — ensuring that highly qualified individuals from all backgrounds are considered. DEI just ensures that those candidates have a seat at the table.
The conversation definitely isn’t going to end this month. I’d love to know how your company is approaching DEI and what changes may be forthcoming. If you are willing to share, or want to see a DEI-related topic addressed in future issues of Insight, please email me at awolff@insightonbusiness.com.
