Local news about the companies, people and issues that impact business in Northeast Wisconsin and beyond.

The month of October brings a special focus on one of the cornerstones of our regional economy: manufacturing. In honor of October Manufacturing Month, this issue of Insight dives into several facets of the industry and spotlights local manufacturers from around the region.

First up is our cover story featuring Bemis Manufacturing Company. Headquartered in Sheboygan Falls, Bemis is renowned globally as one of the top manufacturers of toilet seats, but the company’s impact extends far beyond the bathroom. In addition to its toilet seat division, Bemis’ contract group is a leader in injection molding technology, creating complex plastic products for consumer, commercial, medical and industrial markets worldwide. Turn to page 26 to learn more about how the fourth-generation family company has evolved, while staying true to its roots, over its 123 years.

From harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (Manufacturing Industry Report, pg. 37) to cutting-edge wound care dressing that accelerates healing (Home Made, pg. 62), you will find many more examples of manufacturing innovation within this issue.

October is one of the busiest months at Insight as we gear up for the Manufacturing First Expo & Conference presented by First Business Bank on Oct. 30. This conference, now the state’s largest manufacturing event, brings together industry leaders, innovators and professionals for a full day of learning and networking. From keynote speakers and breakout sessions on the latest trends to an expo hall with more than 200 exhibitors, Manufacturing First offers invaluable opportunities for connection and collaboration. You can still register at manufacturingfirst.com.

For Insight on Manufacturing Editor Kate Bruns and NEW Manufacturing Alliance Executive Director Ann Franz, Manufacturing Month is actually a year-round concept. The pair co-hosts NEW Manufacturing Insights, a collaborative podcast between IOM and NEWMA which features issues and opportunities for manufacturers in the New North. This month marks the one-year anniversary of the weekly podcast and I sincerely hope you have given it a listen, but if you haven’t, please consider this your invitation to join in the fun. It’s my favorite 20 minutes of my Thursday morning commute.

As we celebrate October Manufacturing Month, it’s clear that Northeast Wisconsin manufacturers are not just keeping up with the times — they are leading the way. I hope you find inspiration in the stories of those who are shaping the future of manufacturing, one innovation at a time.
