Attorney General Josh Kaul is joining 54 other attorneys general to move ahead with a proposed $7.4 billion settlement agreement with Purdue Pharma and its ownership, the Sackler family, WMTV15 reports. With a finalized agreement, Wisconsin would receive as much as $80.1 million over the next 15 years.
The settlement comes after Purdue Pharma was accused of worsening the nationwide opioid crisis. The next step in the agreement process will ask local governments across the U.S. to join the settlement, contingent on bankruptcy court proceedings.
If the settlement is finalized, the Sacklers would lose the ability to sell opioids in the U.S., as well as control of Purdue Pharma. Funds distributed among states would be put toward supporting addiction treatment, prevention and recovery.
