Does it get much cooler than a 140-ton crane? Voters in the 2021 “Coolest Thing” contest certainly didn’t think so. Broadwind Heavy Fabrications in Manitowoc today sits on the hallowed ground where Manitowoc Shipbuilding once made World War II submarines. Today, Broadwind fabricates products for the U.S. Navy, including a pair of 175-tonners scheduled to make their debut this year. Broadwind’s Director of Business Development Brett Hartman told Insight last fall that it takes upwards of 80 people the better part of a year to complete one crane, with a completion celebration that includes a custom beer from Sabbatical Brewing Co.
